In October of 2013 a Vaughan resident had a real scare. There was a bat in this resident’s home and it tested positive for rabies. The bat even bit one of the homeowners. The homeowner was okay because he received immediate treatment…but a brush with a disease like this is always scary. The homeowner was attempting to trap the bat himself, which is never a very good idea—it takes a keen understanding of the behavior of bats and other animals to trap them humanely and safely, especially if they’re suffering from rabies.

Rabies usually makes animals far more aggressive than they’d otherwise be. It’s a good idea to keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date, and it’s a good idea to pay attention to any signs of bat infestation in your home.
As a part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Vaughan also faces a rather heavy citywide infestation of raccoons. It’s quite common to find them in chimneys, attics, and even in walls.

And, as you’ve already seen, Vaughan squirrels see absolutely no problem with helping themselves to a warm, dry space in a homeowner’s attic. They’re crafty creatures too, and mother squirrels want safe spaces to have their babies. Unfortunately, they’re also very destructive once they get up there.

There’s no hospital within its boundaries, which means residents need to take extra care when dealing with wild animals. Any incident would require more travel time than the average GTA resident would have to deal with.

Note that you should not call Vaughan Animal Control when you find you have an infestation of birds, raccoon’s, squirrels, groundhogs, skunks, or bats. Animal Services deals primarily with domestic animals. Pet licensing, dog and cat adoptions, lost pets and domestic animal law all fall within their purview. In fact, they tell you right on their “Urban Wildlife” page that they are unable to respond to urban wildlife concerns.
